  1. STAGE 1 MADRID – GRANADA – 0 KM

Arrival at Madrid Airport and transfer to Granada via high speed train, a 4 hour journey. Be sure to select a flight that will land in Madrid early in the day to give you plenty of time to reach the train station by midday.

After checking into your lodge for the evening, you can choose to either sit back and relax or opt for a stroll around this historical town.

  2. STAGE 2 GRANADA – MOCLIN – 26 KM (16 miles)

The day starts with a short shuttle to avoid the large urban area of Granada. The walking starts along the flat valley floor towards the mountains. Passing Pinos Puente along the way – an ancient, interesting bridge.

The day ends with an abrupt 3km climb to the town of Moclin and its fortress, the first of many fortresses in this region of Spain. The views here are well-worth the effort.

  3. STAGE 3 MOCLIN – ALCALA LA REAL – 22 KM (13 miles)

From Moclin, it is a lovely downhill with a possible side trip to some caves along the way. Tonight’s stop is a large, funcional city often bypassed by tourists. Its hilltop fortress though is quite impressive and is currently being restored as a future Parador.

  4. STAGE 4 ALCALA LA REAL – ALCAUDETE – 27 KM (17 miles)

This days walk has very few stops in between so come prepared with a lunch in hand. The gradual downhill from yesterday continues through more olive groves to Alcaudete, where another hilltop fortress awaits you.

  5. STAGE 5 ALCAUDETE – BAENA – 30 KM (19 miles)

Don’t let today’s long distance fool you, the terrain is relatively level and is therefore do-able at a good rhythm. You will pass by a large lagoon, home to some unique birds that migrate via this body of water. A very peaceful section.

Baena, our home for the evening, is another fairly large village with all the services one requires. The hilltop monastery not only offers nice views but is an important heritage for the region.

  6. STAGE 6 BAENA – CASTRO DEL RIO – 20 KM (12 miles)

A relaxed day with no villages passed along the way so, be prepared with enough food and water to last throughout.

Castro del rio has a few interesting churches to visit as well as remains of an ancient fort.

  7. STAGE 7 CASTRO DEL RIO – CORDOBA – 36 KM (22 miles)

A long stretch but very level for most of the day to the legendary town of Cordoba. A city filled with beautiful 19th century architecture, roman ruins, arab baths, fortresses…all in one place. One will want to spend a good chunk of time here so, an early start to the day is worthwhile.

  8. Stage 8 CORDOBA – MADRID – 0 KM

Afternoon return via high speed train to Madrid.
